It was an ordinary weekday afternoon when my twelve-year-old daughter, Carmen, walked through the front door after school. Her backpack was slung casually over one shoulder.

She dropped her bag in the hallway, took off her shoes, and headed to the kitchen, where I was preparing dinner.
“Mom, guess what?” she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“What is it, darling?” I replied, smiling at her enthusiasm. I love it when my children are enthusiastic about school.

“We had this super fun general knowledge quiz at school today. I think we should all try it!” she said.
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her excitement. Little Miss Carmen loved proving she was smarter than all of us at home, and taking this quiz was probably the last way she’d do it.
“A quiz, eh?” I asked, cutting up some chicken for the curry. “How did you do?”

“I got 20 out of 25 answers correct!” she said, beaming with pride.
“Wow! That’s impressive,” I said, genuinely surprised. Carmen was retaining the knowledge well, but still, it was a high score. “You know what? Let’s all sit down and do it after dinner.”
Carmen laughed and nodded.

“I’ll prepare it,” she said.
She ran to get her backpack. I watched her pull out a notebook and start tearing up pieces of paper for each of us.
“I wrote it all down here,” she said.
While she was settling in, my husband, Gary, came into the kitchen, curious about all the commotion.

“What’s going on here?” he asked, leaning on the counter. “Besides that delicious smell, Nora.”
“Mom is about to take the quiz I took at school today,” Carmen explained, holding up her notebook like a game show host.
Naturally, my husband’s competitive streak immediately manifested itself.
“Oh, really? Count me in! Let’s see who’s the smartest in this family, huh?” he said.

It wasn’t long before dinner was over and the whole family was gathered around the dining table. Even my mother-in-law, Carol, who was staying with us for the week, couldn’t resist joining in.
My oldest son, Jake, who is seventeen and usually too cool for this kind of thing, finally put down his phone and decided to participate.
“Okay, let’s do it,” he said with a big smile. “But don’t feel too bad when I crush you all!”

We all took our seats, the atmosphere buzzing with excitement and a hint of competitive tension.
“Are you all ready?” Carmen asked, holding her notebook.
“Hurry up,” Gary teased.
My daughter began reading the questions one by one. Each of us scribbled our answers on sheets of paper.

“Don’t cheat!” Carmen would say every few minutes.
“Don’t yell at us!” Carol exclaimed, chewing on her pencil.
The questions ranged from history and geography to science and pop culture. Some were simple, others had us scratching our heads.
“Question 9,” Carmen announced. “Which of the following is not a Greek god or goddess? Oceanus, Chaos, Hypnos, or Divinity?”

“Who the hell knows?” Gary said, looking confused.
I wrote my answer quickly, feeling confident in my guess. But as the questions continued, I realized that I might not be as up-to-date on general knowledge as I thought.
Every now and then, I’d catch Gary looking puzzled, Carol yawning, and Jake’s expression shifting from arrogance to concentration.

When Carmen finished the quiz, we were all nervous and eager to see how we had done.
“I don’t think I’m smarter than a twelve-year-old,” Gary muttered.
Carmen collected our papers and began counting the points. I could see her eyes widen slightly as she reviewed each one.
“Good,” she said, trying to keep a straight face. “Here are the results. Jake, you got 19 out of 25.”
Jake raised his fist in the air.
“Okay, okay, not bad, not bad.”
“Mom, you only got… 16 out of 25,” Carmen continued, a hint of a smile appearing on her face.
“Dad, you got 15,” she said.
“Oh! As long as I beat Dad, it’s fine!” I said, laughing.
“Oh, come on!” Gary moaned, throwing up his hands in frustration. “I’m only one point behind you! I’ll get you next time!”

“And what about Grandma?” I asked.
“Let’s not talk about that,” Carmen said, laughing and tearing Carol’s sheet in half.
“And remember, I got 20!” Carmen said, dancing around the table.
We all clapped and cheered for our little girl.
“Well done, darling,” I said. “You definitely get to brag to the family.”

“Mom, why don’t you make us some ice cream sundaes?” Jake asked, picking up his phone again.
“I’ll be right there,” I said as Gary and I went into the kitchen.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned,” he said, pulling out a bottle of chocolate sauce, “it’s that Carmen just proved we need to brush up on our general knowledge.”
“Yes, just like you can do a search to find out who invented the first ice cream sundae,” I laughed.
